The First Week of Food

Days 1 & 2: Avocado 🥑

Leo’s first real food. I prepare a mix of finger length slices and smashed avocado with a preloaded spoon. Leo isn’t so interested in the slices but grabs the spoon right away and seems to know just what to do with it (near enough, anyway. Everyone wants to try wearing an avocado moustache once in their life right?)

Days 3 & 4: Spinach 🥗

I use fresh spinach, steamed for 8 mins and chopped into pieces to get rid of any stringiness. Leo absolutely loves this one, grabbing the spoon straight away and pretty much eating the whole lot on both days. Funnily enough, spinach was my absolute fave food as a baby so maybe this Popeye Pud gets his love for spinach from his mumma  Whatever the case, I’m glad he’s loving his veggies so far!

Day 5: Carrot 🥕

I steam two large whole carrots for 12 minutes, slicing one in half and mashing the other before popping it on a pre-loaded spoon. Leo’s quite tired I think as it’s the end of the day so maybe not the best time for trying a new food, and he seems more interested in chomping on his bib. But he still gives the carrot a good go and I think?? it’s a thumbs up from pud 👍

Day 6: Greek yogurt, carrot & broccoli (not together 😆) 🥕🥦

Start the day with a dollop of full fat Greek yogurt. I’m always eating Greek yogurt with berries as part of my breakfast (usually brunch or lunch by the time I get round to it ) Leo’s been eyeing up my breakfast for a while so I offer up a dollop of full fat Greek yogurt for him today. Boy does he love it!

In the evening we steam a couple of carrots and some broccoli florets all for about 12 minutes (probably a bit too long for the broccoli really). I mash some carrot and broccoli together and preload the spoon, leading the rest as slices to hold. Leo plays about with the slices a bit but again, much prefers feeding himself the mash with the spoon. He eats almost the entire lot!

Day 7: Greek yogurt & blitz blueberry purée, mashed banana 🫐🍌

Start the day with another dollope o’ Greek yogurt breakfast, adding in a blitz blueberry compote today. I blend fresh blueberries (37, to be exact) with a little water to make the compote. Thankfully, Leo absolutely adores this one, because he also works out how to catapult yogurt across the length of the table so if he hadn’t scoffed most of it, who knows what state this room would be in.

In the evening I take a bit of a lazy route and mash up roughly half a banana. It’s been a long day, Leo’s getting tired and so, we need something even quicker and easier than the usual quick and easy steamed veg. How does the banana go? Well, bit of a slow start. Leo eats the wrong end of the spoon, gives himself a banana beard, that kind of thing. But eventually he gets a taste of the banana and before we know it he’s eaten the entire lot.

Week 1: verdict

Thus far, I think it’s fair to say we’ve got a little foodie on our hands. No surprise, since we all love our food here! I’m definitely feeling all the proud mama feels this week as Leo’s so confident using the spoon and every food has been a success so far. And hey, the mess isn’t so bad either, though I’m sure it’ll get way worse once Leo starts digging the finger foods more.

Right now, Leo’s reaching to grab the spoon and smash it into his top lip/eyes/nose, and eventually mouth every time so, I figure I’ll let him continue with that and therefore keep offering up the mashed option along with the finger foods.

To my amazement, we haven’t had any gagging yet, though I’m sure it’s only a matter of time. And I’ve still no idea what’s happening with the open cup of water. Yesterday we were out at a cafe and Leo took a sip of water from an open cup I was holding, so no idea why he just rolls the bamboo cup onto the floor. Heyho, we’ll see what happens from here. 🤷‍♀️😂

What was your approach to weaning? How did it go?
